What Is Windows 11 S Mode, and Should You Use it?

Then those schools obviously wouldn't be interested in Chromebooks, which is the market they're going after. Those schools that want full blown Windows have always had that option. With RT was that it was locked to Store Only for good due to having the wrong CPU in it.

If you really, really want to, you can go ahead and upgrade yourself to Windows 10 Pro, unlocking the ability to run programs from outside the Windows Store. This is excellent for devices like the Surface Laptop, a premium device, where users may want to take advantage of apps from outside the Store. What's more, since you can't install rogue Win32 programs from outside the Store, battery life should be slightly better too. Remember, Windows 10 S is for people who like Chromebooks. It's for lightweight devices where the user spends most of their time in a web browser.

Now, admittedly there's still a plethora of programs missing from the Windows Store. Programs such as most of Adobe's Creative Cloud suite, Chrome, Firefox, XSplit, and many more. But if you're someone who needs to use those kinds of programs, you're likely not going to be looking at devices that come pre-loaded with Windows 10 S to begin with.

This is the point Panos made when he open the lid on the Surface laptop. So basically it will be a proper windows 10 OS, minus the option of installing software programs. Given the current state of windows 10 store, that looks like a stupid idea. However, if 10S gets popular in 'normal' laptops, MS might be hoping that more developers woudl want to put their apps on the store. That is a gamble, but it is the only attempt MS has made recently to focus on its store.

The Windows Registry Is Off-limits

So the Surface Laptop with an i5 or i7 processor might actually be good for enterprise. Windows 10 in S mode is a version of the Windows 10 operating system that is optimized for performance and security. The security and safety features of Windows 10 in S mode include the latest updates from Windows Defender. Security is additionally boosted by not allowing users to download apps not offered through the official Microsoft Store. S mode restricts the applications that can run on the computer to Microsoft Store applications only. So, your child cannot download software from third-party sources.

Given this challenge, expect student enthusiasm about a Windows environment that can't run Steam to be tepid at best. As you might imagine, I had some messes to clean up. The only reason that piece of malware hadn't transmitted his information was that there were so many other malware infections on the machine that they'd effectively strangled each other.

Windows 10 S review: My time with the new edition of Windows

Using Minecraft to teach students about programming isn't good enough. Literally windows 10 with the option to install additional programs from outside the store behind a paywall. If you can do it on a clean install of 10, you can do it on 10 S. Get alot of schools and businesses using it, and apps will come. Not everthing, but maybe enought to get a small wave with some momentum.

The Windows app also syncs with matching mobile versions for iOS and Android. As mentioned above, with the May 2019 Update, you can now uninstall 17 of these apps that used to be mandatory. Not everyone needs the Print 3D app taking up system space. Also arriving with that update are new Notepad options and shortcuts.

How to Activate S Mode in Windows 11

As Microsoft revealed in August, the low-cost Windows 10 S laptopswon’t ship until at least September, possibly missing the back-to-school window for the 2017 school year. Microsoft’s Windows 10 S is what happens when a once-easygoing operating system has kids and turns into a helicopter parent. Windows 10 S, a locked-down version of Windows 10 found on the Surface Laptop and a small group of low-cost, third-party notebooks, keeps students safe and secure by restricting them to the Windows Store.

But, Windows 10 S is slightly different in one major way. It's locked to the Windows Store, meaning apps from outside the Store simply won't install on Windows 10 S. Again, it’s easy to switch out of S mode but very difficult to switch back into it.

The app situation may change, particularly if Windows 10 S becomes popular enough to be a draw for developers to get their programs into the Windows Store. If you only use the built-in Windows apps, such as Mail and Calendar, People, Skype, Edge and Office, Windows 10 S won’t seem any different – expect the speed. It behaves just like any other version of Windows 10.

One of my favorite recent features in Windows 10 is the revamped Windows clipboard, which lets you access several previously copied items, a convenience that's long overdue on all computing platforms. You access the list of copied items using Windows Key-V instead of Ctrl-V. Syncing the cloud clipboard means that they're accessible on other PCs you're signed in to, and later this will extend to phones via the SwiftKey add-in keyboard. You turn on clipboard syncing in a new Settings option. According to Microsoft documentation, the clipboard history supports plain text, HTML, and images less than 4MB.

Here's the first big win in what Microsoft is doing. They're not taking away a fully functional Windows that allows the installation of non-Store apps and requiring just store apps. All they're doing is offering another type of Windows that you can choose to use or install. In this way, Microsoft isn't alienating or knee-capping all of its professional users.

There's a common misconception with this new edition of Windows 10. Many are looking at it as some kind of "lite" version of Windows, as it being locked to the Windows Store means you can't install apps like Google Chrome or Adobe Premiere Pro. While true, Windows 10 S is absolutely not a "lite" version of Windows in any way, shape or form. It looks and behaves just like any normal version of Windows 10. This limitation will likely be a pretty big deal for many Windows users. Luckily, most people probably won't encounter Windows 10 S in their daily lives, as this new edition of Windows 10 is aimed mostly at competing with Chromebooks.

They will continue to change their code to make it look better on Win 10 by incorporating XAML and other tech BUT they can reuse the same code to target Windows 7 and release it in Windows Store for 8/10. More IMPORTANTLY, if devs wants to target Xbox One, Hololens and IoT, they need to stripped out all the Win32 code that requires Full Trust. It's not a very hard thing to do to move my code to UWP but the bridges allow me to do it at my pace.
